Case Study: 2018 BMW i8
Today’s case study is a 2018 BMW i8, in Sophisto Grey Metallic.
The car belongs to one of my top clients, a very successful financial advisor, who’s been using my services for more than 10 years.
She is extremely busy with work and family, and this is her “me time” car.
I’ve been personally been looking after this car for her since she first got it, about 3 years ago.
This BMW i8 does not ever get excessively dirty. Mostly because it sees no kids, and no out-of-city driving. (perhaps only a small dog, every once in a while…)
So, inside this car there are no candy wrappers, no half-eaten crackers, and no chewing gum stuck on the carpet.
Just every day dust and dirt, that typically accumulates inside any car.
With a BMW i8, you have to know what you’re doing when you’re cleaning it, otherwise you can easily mess up something, which would be an expensive mistake.
It’s got a carbon fibre roof, that scratches easily, and so does the hood. Especially if you lay the power cord on either of them when charging the battery.
Doors are opening up, so they require a special technique to clean them, and also extra care.
It’s a difficult, and very time consuming, car to clean because of the design details and intricacies of the different body panels.
The owner does sometimes run the BMW i8 through an automated car wash, just to spray off the leaves and dirt that might’ve landed on the car while sitting in the driveway.
This time, besides the usual thorough and meticulous cleaning inside and out, the car also received a Ceramic Coating application.
And here’s why:
From a normal viewing distance, the paint on a car looks like a flat and smooth surface.
However, if you looked at it through a microscope, you would see an uneven surface, with peaks and valleys.
All this “encourages” the dirt and grime to stick on.

The immediate effect is that the car stays cleaner for a longer time than usual. It also looks shiny, almost like brand new.

As you can see, the exterior is in pretty good condition, mostly because of frequent washing.
Even with that, there was still a noticeable improvement after the cleaning session was done.

Quick side note: Many car owners expect an interior in such condition to come out clean with “just a quick vacuum”. This is never the case. Aside from a thorough and extensive vacuuming, the carpets need to be shampooed, otherwise the improvement is minimal at best.
In this particular case, the client followed my advice, and chose the appropriate cleaning package.
A few hours of solid and meticulous cleaning, and my client’s BMW i8 is completely transformed…

We always get better results cleaning a higher-end car, such as a BMW, which is mostly because of the quality materials BMW uses in assembling their cars.
Just like anything else in life, with cars you get what you pay for. In this case, you pay more for a BMW than you’d pay for most cars, but you get much better, and more durable finishings.
