Today’s case study is a 2018 Mercedes B250 4Matic, in Metallic Red.
This Mercedes belongs to a regular customer, who uses our service on a constant basis, about 5-6 times per year.
When we first met, she had tried out pretty much every car detailing service in the city, and had been disappointed time and time again.
“It’s not their quality”, she told me, “they all dis a good job cleaning wise”.
But it was their lack of customer service, and the way those places seemed to be set up to deal with male customers only.
“I felt patronized, and looked-down at, because I was a woman”, she said. “They weren’t rude or anything like that, but I just felt uncomfortable there”.

The owner of the Mercedes B250 uses the car mostly by herself, as the kids are all grown up now, and the husband drives his own car.
No one rides in the back seat, kids or dog, so that area only gets a bit dusty in between cleanings. And she takes the car to a drive-through car wash every other week, and the exterior remains in good condition year round.

Today’s case study is a 2017 Mercedes GLE 43 AMG, in Metallic Grey.
This Mercedes belongs to a new client, referred to us by his brother-in-law who is a longtime client. He works in real estate, doing a mix of residential and commercial developments at the moment.

They have 5 other cars in the household, and he uses them by rotation, depending on the season and mood-of-the-day.
This Mercedes GLE 43 AMG is his preferred Fall/Winter car, and the family had just returned from a quick getaway to the Okanagan Valley.
Since they enjoyed a stretch of sunny days, the front end of the car was plastered with dead bugs. Which, in case you didn’t know, are highly acidic, and will etch into the car’s paint if left sitting on it for long.
Cleaning bug splatter from the exterior of a car is no easy task. Many people would think it is as easy as blasting the area with water, and scrubbing as hard as you can.
Not so. In fact, by approaching it this way, one could easily do more harm than good.
The bug splatter needs to be soaked and softened first with a special chemical. Many such chemicals on the market are either too harsh, or completely ineffective. We found ours after years of testing.
Also, no scrubbing. Scrubbing will only scratch the finish on the car, leaving unsightly marks.
Also, on such long trips, the whole family spends a bunch of time in the enclosed space which is the interior of the car. Bacteria and toxins build up, especially in the air ducts. It is very important, upon returning home, to do a thorough cleaning and sanitizing of the whole interior of the car in order to get rid of all the contaminants.

In the past, the owner of this Range Rover Sport had some less-than-satisfying experiences with other car cleaning sources, so he was reluctant to go with us at first.

Today’s case study is a 2023 Range Rover Velar, in Obsidian Black.
The car belongs to a longtime client, with a stable of 5-6 cars that are being constantly updated.
This Range Rover Velar is now his personal daily driver, but sometimes the wife uses the car for quick errands.
Which means that this car never goes on highways, and almost never sees snow. But being parked outdoors 24/7 shows, and the typical green moss overgrowth around the edges and trim it’s starting to appear.
Since this little algae-type plant attaches itself firmly to the surface it grows on, drive-trough car washes alone cannot remove it.
The right way to clean moss from the exterior surface of the car is by using a specialized cleaner, a small brush, and lots and lots of patience. It is a time-consuming task, and trying a more aggressive method to save time usually ends up damaging the paint.
There is also a way to prevent this, and that is by having your car washed properly about once a month. The wash removes the moss in its early stages of growth, and doesn’t give it a chance to stick to the car in the first place.
Hand washes work best for this, because they’re more thorough than the drive-through alternatives.
Aside from having its own little ecosystem on board, the Range Rover Velar is in good shape. No visible wear-and-tear yet, and well maintained overall.

How this Tesla Model Y got to be cleaned and detailed by Clean My Car — background story
This client has brought every single one of his Tesla cars to me. First one back in 2010 when I was still a one-man show, operating out of the underground parkade at the cruise ship terminal at Canada Place.
During one of the many conversations we’ve had over the years, he told that he has tried pretty much every single electric car on the market available from mainstream manufacturers. (He doesn’t like trucks, so he’s never been interested in the Rivian brand.) And that he always preferred Tesla over any other brand.
According to him, Tesla is the only car brand which figured out how to make using an everyday car a simple and enjoyable activity. Every other brand, including the luxury names, has unnecessarily complicated and frustrating to use features.
In my client’s own words, “Tesla got this right for the average person.”

The exterior was in okay condition, since the car hadn’t been driven that much after the last clean a month ago (the owner had been away on vacation overseas).
However, the best way to preserve it in good condition in the first place is to have the paint protected with a ceramic-based paint protection product. This creates a strong glass-like film on the car paint, which acts as a “sacrificial barrier” against bird poo, acid rain, fallout, bug splatter, and hard water spots.
But that will be a job for some other time. For now, we just did a thorough cleaning, and still turned out looking 10 times better than before.

This Mercedes belongs to a new client, who just bought the car from an auction place, with the intention of using it as his daily driver.

It looks like the place he bought it from didn’t put any effort into cleaning this car, as it was not in good condition. The car is mechanically sound, with relatively low mileage, but quite dirty and uncared for otherwise.
The owner contacted us to see if we could at least improve the condition of this Mercedes CLA 250, but his hopes were not high. And upon seeing it, it was obvious that the car had not been cleaned in a long time, possibly even a few years.
The owner and I had a conversation after the initial inspection of the car. We agreed that, given the condition the car was in, we can commit to deliver any specific results, and will focus instead on achieving a significant improvement.

I met with him at his residence in the Southland area to have a look at the car. He also has another vintage Porsche which we’ll service just before Summer with our Mobile Detailing unit.
This Porsche Cayenne is fairly recent, and has never been professionally detailed. The owner took to a drive-through car wash a couple of times, and vacuumed the interior himself, but found this too much of a headache.
That’s when he started searching for a mobile car detailing service in Vancouver.
Besides us, he requested quotes from several local car detailing companies he found on Google, but as he confessed later, some of the companies didn’t bother responding at all, and out of the ones which did respond, none inspired much confidence.

Today’s case study is a 2015 BMW i3 XDrive, in Mineral Grey Metallic.
This BMW belongs to a longtime client of ours, who’s been using our service for the last 6-7 years.
The car was bought as an anniversary gift for his wife. And since this was a purchase from a private seller, not a car dealer, the car had not been cleaned and detailed before the sale.
Previous owner took reasonably good care of the car (he was the original owner), but as per his own admission, the BMW i3 had never been “professionally cleaned”, other than the occasional budget quick wash and vacuum deal.
My client wanted to make sure that the car looks like a proper gift, and that his wife is happy. He asked me to, as much as possible, “erase any traces of previous ownership” from the car.
With that mission in mind, we made a plan, and set to work.
A 10-year old car, even when in great condition, will still show its age in certain spots. There is some wear-and-tear on the fabric of the seats, the driver’s side seat bolster, the steering wheel, and the floor mats. But by cleaning these areas very well, with the right products and techniques, they can be brought back to a 90% like-new condition.

The car belongs to a new client, referred by another one of our clients. He is a Senior Vice-President in a major North American corporation, headquartered in Vancouver.

The owner uses the car almost daily for getting to and from the office, and occasionally on the weekends. That goes on year round, except during heavy snowfalls, as the owner doesn’t want to risk getting it damaged during those times.
The plan is to keep the Mercedes GLE 43 AMG for another few years, as he really likes it. So, he’s willing to invest time and money in maintaining it in the best possible condition.

The car belongs to a new client, who’s been referred to us by his daughter. The daughter herself has been using our service for the past 3 years.

The owner is retired, and uses the car almost daily, but mostly for short trips in the city, and the occasional Sunday drive up the Sea-to-Sky highway. They also have another car in the family, which his wife drives almost exclusively.
Although in overall good shape, this Mercedes S-Class hasn’t been professionally cleaned in years. And coming out of a long Winter now, it needed a thorough clean quite badly.
Having had a bad experience with another company in the past, the owner was reluctant to try our service at first. He felt, like many other people, that all car cleaning companies are the same. And he didn’t mean it in a flattering way…

This client is a busy executive at a major Downtown Vancouver firm, which I won’t name here, and her Audi Q4 is only about 3 months old — practically an infant.
Even though it is a family car, used to haul the kids to school and activities, it didn’t have yet the chance to do real hard work.
And so, a bit unusual for a car in this position, the Audi Q4 only needed a light interior and exterior cleaning.
This was more a service meant to preserve the good condition the Q4 is still in, rather than the typical bring-back-to-life operation we normally do on most family cars.
There is a very simple trick at work here:

Today’s case study is a 2022 Mercedes AMG GT 63S 4MATIC+ 4-door Coupe, in MANUFAKTUR Graphite Grey MAGNO.
The car belongs to a new client, who was referred to us by the Front Desk Manager at one of the most prominent Downtown Vancouver hotels.
This owner drives the car mostly by himself, and sometimes with his fiancée. He has an interest in several businesses, and uses the car everyday.
As a result, the Mercedes hasn’t been cleaned in over a year.
The exterior was very dirty, especially the large wheels, but the interior not so much. Regardless of that, the car underwent the same rigorous cleaning regimen as any car does, because we use the same exact 35 steps every single time, which produce consistent quality results.
Now, I don’t know much else about this particular customer, because like I said, he came to us as a hotel guest. This is part of an arrangement we have with a couple of Downtown Vancouver hotels, providing the car cleaning service on demand for their VIP guests.
When the hotel has one such guest requesting a car cleaning, the Front Desk Manager calls me to take care of it. I go and pick up the car, bring it over to our closest shop where we clean it according to the Clean My Car system, and then return the car to the hotel.

The matte finish hides the true condition of the exterior of the car very well. The only thing that gives it away is the wheels. Take a closer look at the Before and After shots.
This finish cannot be waxed, or even scrubbed too hard, because this destroys the texture, and creates shiny spots. You have to know what you’re doing, otherwise you can make an irreversible mess.

How this Tesla Model X got to be cleaned and detailed by Clean My Car — background story
It’s been a while since this Tesla got a proper cleaning, so this was no easy mission.
When you let your car go for a long time, there’s always a chance that some of the dirt might literally bond to the surfaces, and become permanent.
Cleaning your car on a regular basis, even if it’s only 2 times per year, helps maintain it in good condition.
This client also has a couple of other cars we cleaned previously, but this one hasn’t been touched in over a year — and it shows.
The dashboard was covered with a thick layer of dust. The center console and cupholders were a sticky mess, spotted all over with old coffee spills. The leather seats were grimy, and full of crumbs. And the inside of the windows was all smeared and hazy.
To make matters worse, during an early-morning school run, a lunch container with a loosely-attached lid toppled, and chicken noodle soup ended up on the carpet. Even though that happened over a month ago, there’s still a pungent lingering smell inside the car, reminding everyone of the incident.
(By the way, if that ever happens to you, the right response is to mop up the spill as best as you can rightaway, and then do an Interior Sanitizing Treatment to kill of any remaining bacteria. Otherwise, the smell will never go away on it’s own.)

The exterior was in pretty bad condition, since it hadn’t been cleaned in such a long time.
However, the best way to preserve it in good condition in the first place is to have the paint protected with a ceramic-based paint protection product. This creates a strong glass-like film on the car paint, which acts as a “sacrificial barrier” against bird poo, acid rain, fallout, bug splatter, and hard water spots.
But that will be a job for some other time. For now, we just did a thorough cleaning, and still turned out looking 10 times better than before.

This Rolls Royce belongs to a new client, who first requested our Information Kit to get acquainted with the company, before deciding to go ahead with a personalized Car Audit.
At that point, the car had been sitting for almost a year without any maintenance cleaning.
Before, the owner would typically take to the drive-through car wash for a quick exterior clean. The downside was that the interior of the car wasn’t getting any attention.
This Ghost is used an all-around family car, but the interior was not in terrible shape overall.
With one exception:

These floor mats are designed to be luxuriously comfortable, even if you were standing on them barefoot, with long and soft fibers.
The downside is that the floor mats become extremely effective at trapping and locking in dirt, twigs, and sand.
To get the bulk of the dirt out of the mats, vacuuming alone took us several hours. Also, cleaning has to be gentle, to not ruin the wool, which requires much more care than with a regular synthetic material.

As far as the exterior of the car was concerned, because of sitting parked all throughout winter and spring, there was a green buildup of moss along side doors and trunk lid edges.

This Volvo belongs to a new client, who’s been referred to me by another one of my longtime clients.
The owner had purchased the car earlier in the year, and was looking to get it back in shape after a summer of road trips with the family.
Unlike other Volvo cars I’ve seen before, this one was not in a desperate condition, but it sure needed help.
Volvo has a reputation of making good and safe family cars, usually preferred by parents with young children.
And because the little ones need to be kept busy during long rides, there’s a lot of snacking going on in the back seat.
So, crumbs and food leftovers make up much of the “dirt” in a family car.
What comes with this is A LOT of bacteria.
Bacteria naturally appear to help decompose all the organic matter, including food.
There’s also MOLD.
Mold is a fungus that grows on decaying matter, such as food leftovers, and can be very dangerous to your health.
Mold spores are carried around by air drafts. In an enclosed space, such as a car, you can easily breath it in, leading to respiratory issues.

The owner was looking for a way to maintain his beloved Tesla in great condition, having been disappointed in the past by the lack of performance from various car washes.
Like a lot of other car owners, he tried to do most of the work himself at first.
He bought an assortment of car care products and enthusiastically set out to clean the car.
However, as he quickly realized, cleaning a car properly is hard work.
And having to do that in the evening or the weekend, when he had time off, was downright unpleasant and frustrating.

The Tesla owner’s main complaint about the condition of the car was a number of bird poo marks on the front side. It also needed a thorough interior detail, as the owner’s dog travels pretty much everywhere with him, and the Model 3 hadn’t been cleaned since purchase.
Many car owners are very surprised when they try to clean a bird poo mark, and it doesn’t come off.
Here’s the reason why:
Bird poo is very acidic by nature. When left sitting on a car’s paint for more than a few minutes, it actually etches into the paint itself, leaving a permanent mark.
These bird poo marks are also more obvious on dark-colour cars, where they stand out easier.
Sometimes, these bird poo marks on car paint can be diminished, or even completely eliminated, by treating the area with a special polishing product. This procedure is better to be done by an experienced person, because of the risk of creating more damage than good.
However, the best way to prevent bird poo marks on car paint in the first place is to have the paint protected with a ceramic-based paint protection product. This creates a strong glass-like film on the car paint, which acts as a “sacrificial barrier” against bird poo, acid rain, fallout, bug splatter, and hard water spots.

The exterior was in pretty good condition, since this Tesla Model 3 is only about 9-months old.
We did get rid of all the bird poo marks on the front end, and treated the car paint with a Ceramic Coating.
It now looks brighter and shinier than when it was brand new, at it’s also protected for up to 2 years. Also, it doesn’t require any special maintenance other than a thorough cleaning every 4 to 6 months.

The interior was a different story…
When you spend time in a car, even if just by yourself and the occasional passenger, dirt gets dragged inside no matter how careful you are.
There was quite a bit of dog hair stuck on the carpet and mats, and in every crack and crevice at the back of the car. The white interior was surprisingly forgiving, without any major stains.

Quick side note: Many car owners expect an interior in such condition to come out clean with “just a quick vacuum”. This is never the case. Aside from a thorough and extensive vacuuming, the carpets need to be shampooed, otherwise the improvement is minimal at best.
In this particular case, the client followed my advice, and chose the appropriate cleaning package.
